Utah in the Black Motorists’ Safety Travel Guides

  • Millcreek Common 1354 East Chambers Avenue Millcreek, UT, 84106 United States (map)

In our 2026 partnership with Millcreek City for Black History Month, our team of university students will present their 3 year research results of “Utah in the Black Motorists’ Safety Travel Guides”. The safety travel guides (the most famous being “The Green Book”) were essential to African Americans traveling safely from state to state during the time of segregation.

In this presentation you will learn why these safety travel guides were needed, what individuals and businesses in Utah participated in providing safe stops for traveling African Americans, and why safe stops in Utah were necessary.
