Volunteers conduct research for exhibits, organize educational events and conferences, and support the production of our history journal. Volunteers also engage with the community by fostering partnerships, preserving historic sites, and promoting our programs.

Sema Hadithi Working Groups

  • Black Women Working Group

    Mothers, teachers, beauty queens, activists, nurses, cheerleaders, and prayer warriors stood as pillars to the community.

  • Veteran/Buffalo Soldier Working Group

    These pioneer-era soldiers served with pride, valor, and honor in the face of conflict, both military and social.

  • Preservation Working Group

    Preservation of historically significant sites of Black and African-ancestor connection ensure that stories and contributions are not lost.

  • Oral History Working Group

    The Oral History working group was created to reach individuals who have intimate knowledge or memory of historical figures and events in the Black community. Collecting these narratives goes a long way to filling the gap of untold histories.

  • Black Church Working Group

    Black churches have served as centers of worship, support, and community. Researchers in this working group engage with community members to research and preserve these important community spaces.

  • Settler Working Group

    The Black community was instrumental in the settling of the Utah Territory and Mountain West. This group is committed to uncovering the complete story of Utah’s early settlers that is inclusive of all communities involved.

  • Black Farmers of Millcreek Working Group

    Following the Civil War African American farmers numbered in the millions. The most successful of those in Utah gathered to create a community on ‘the hill’.

  • Black Baseball Working Group

    Sports has been a mainstay of community in Black Utah. We have an extraordinary legacy of sports, especially in baseball.

  • Special Events Committee

    Special Events is where we touch the community. Whether it is through lectures, presentations, or our annual ancestral remembrance celebration and history conference, we make connections.

Volunteer Projects and Services

Researcher and Writer

Conduct research on topics related to African American history and culture in Utah, collaborate with editor and other writers, assist in sourcing images, documents, and other materials to accompany written pieces, and participate in the peer review and editing process.

Researcher and Compiler

Compile and organize data for inclusion in a geo-mapping project, collaborate with GIS specialists to develop an interactive map showcasing historical data, verify the accuracy of historical information, and assist in the presentation and dissemination of the geo-mapping project.

Site Preservation Coordinator and Steward

Work with local communities, organizations, real estate professionals, and attorneys to protect and maintain historic sites related to African American heritage sites, coordinate volunteer efforts for site clean-up and maintenance, and educate the public about site significance.

Conference Committee Member

Assist in planning and organizing the annual Ancestral Remembrance Celebration and Tell the Story History Conference. Includes coordinating speakers and logistics, event promotion, and supporting the creation and distribution of conference materials.

Oral History Interviewer, Planner, and Transcriber

Conduct and record interviews with individuals, prepare interview questions and coordinate scheduling with interviewees, transcribe oral histories, collaborate with planners, and ensure accuracy and integrity of transcriptions.

Document Scanner, Compiler, and Transcriber

Veterans Project: Scan and digitize historical documents related to Black veterans, compile and organize scanned documents into digital archives, transcribe handwritten documents, collaborate with the Veterans Project team to ensure accuracy, and assist in identifying key documents.

Researcher, Writer, Designer

Exhibit Creation: Conduct research on historical topics, write exhibit content, including text panels, labels, and educational materials, collaborate with designers to create engaging and informative exhibits, assist in sourcing artifacts, images, and documents for display, and participate in the installation and promotion of exhibits.

Family History Coordinator and General Family History Researcher

Assist individuals and families in researching and documenting their family histories, organize and maintain family history records and databases, and develop educational materials on family history research.

Recordkeeper

Assist Secretary and Treasurer: Maintain accurate records of meetings, financial transactions, assist the secretary and treasurer in preparing reports and documentation, organize and file documents and ensure compliance with organizational policies and procedures.

Audio Visual Creator and Coordinator

Develop and produce audio-visual content that supports the Sema Hadithi Foundation’s mission, including videos, podcasts, and multimedia presentations, collaborate with working groups to create engaging and informative content for events, exhibits, and online platforms.

Event Planner

Plan and organize events for the Sema Hadithi Foundation, including fundraisers, conferences, and community outreach events, coordinate with vendors, venues, and partners, manage event logistics, and evaluate event outcomes and gather feedback for future improvements.

Volunteer Coordinator

Recruit, train, and manage volunteers for various projects and events, maintain volunteer schedules and records, serve as the primary point of contact for volunteers, addressing questions, and concerns.
